I first met Tamasine towards the end of 2011. I was a first time dog owner- and had gotten the wrong dog, as both a first time owner and for my lifestyle. Despite the circumstances; my initial ignorance of dog needs; and the difficulty that arose from keeping a dog with no consistent exercise: I discovered her to be quite patient, and persevering against the odds. She provided training for my dog-
and also offered to help find a home that would better fulfill the Border collie breed.
It was quite a difficult decision, and still her support and encouragement exceeded what one would have expected from anyone. She has a sense of commitment to both her clients and the animals she works with, and her follow through is almost contagious. I have never met a person with such great tenacity for difficulties- with such strong “CAN DO” optimism, and such a deep thread of courage to trust in the unknown ability and potential others still need to manifest. After rehoming my border collie, I was convinced that I wouldn’t want another dog. She continued to support me to find the right breed, as far as 3 months down the line, helped deal with issues that arose from poor training, and displayed a dedication towards animals that was both practical and inspiring. The amount of research and creativity she employs when faced with both cultural obstacles and conditioned thinking isn’t just book knowledge- To me her sense of being in the moment, applying principles, and the rare ability to reflect deeply on controversial matters- shows someone who is not only trained her field: she has a maturity of faith and strength in character with both backbone and heart.
I started out with a dog and no idea about animals in an experiential way. Today I have a confidence that is far reaching. I have a 5year old lab x collie,
that initially I thought would be an ordeal due to size, age and some bad behaviors. By the end of the first day with the new dog…my initial fear transformed- I had a deeper sense of who I needed to be. Whatever I had learned with the first few sessions with Tamasine months before was still there. While there are many long time dog owners out there- who seem to know a lot, there are few who live what they know- even more so with trainers. Requiring more of ourselves before we do of others would mean that we create change. I have changed- not by learning a whole lot about dogs- but through consistent practice and application of a few basics about dogs. Tamasine doesn’t say much, she shows the way for someone to begin. The discernment and the ability to create independence and trust within potential owners means that she not only shares her hard won wisdom, but she ensures that they themselves believe in their ability, and are able to follow through with action.
My experience has gone from leash to leadership- I never knew having a dog would mean as much as leadership- it’s what having a dog means for me now.
